3-Ingredient Frozen Blueberry Goat Milk Pucks (Gut Health)

What makes this simple recipe so special? It’s all about the incredible synergy between three powerhouse ingredients. Each one brings something unique to the table (or, in this case, the dog bowl) to support your pup’s digestive and immune systems.

Goat Milk: The Gentle Probiotic Powerhouse

You might wonder, ‘Can dogs have milk?’ While many dogs have trouble digesting the lactose in cow’s milk, goat milk is a different story. It contains smaller fat globules and less lactose, making it much easier for most dogs to digest. More importantly, raw or fermented goat milk (like kefir) is teeming with probiotics – the good bacteria that help maintain a healthy balance in your dog’s gut. A healthy gut microbiome is linked to better digestion, a stronger immune system, and even improved mood!

Blueberries: Nature’s Tiny Antioxidant Bombs

These little blue gems are consistently ranked as one of the best fruits for dogs, and for good reason. Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in your dog’s body. They’re also a great source of fiber, which aids in digestion, and Vitamin C and K, which support the immune system and bone health. Plus, dogs tend to love their sweet taste!

Plain Kefir: The Probiotic Amplifier

To round out our trio, we’re adding plain kefir. Kefir is a fermented drink, traditionally made with milk and ‘kefir grains,’ that is one of the most potent probiotic sources available. It often contains a wider variety of beneficial bacteria and yeast than yogurt. Adding a splash of kefir to our pucks supercharges their gut-supporting properties, creating a treat that truly works from the inside out. Always choose plain, unsweetened kefir, as sweeteners like xylitol are toxic to dogs.

Ready to see how easy this is? You’ll be stocking your freezer with these healthy goodies in no time. All you need is a blender and a silicone mold (paw print or bone shapes are always a hit!).

Ingredients & Tools:

• 1 cup plain goat milk or plain goat milk kefir
• 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
• 1/4 cup plain, unsweetened kefir (or plain yogurt with live active cultures)
• Tools: Blender, Silicone Mold, Measuring Cups

The Steps:

1. Combine Ingredients: Pour the goat milk, blueberries, and kefir directly into your blender.
2. Blend Until Smooth: Secure the lid and blend on high for about 30-60 seconds, or until the mixture is completely smooth and has a beautiful purple hue. If you want some texture, you can pulse it a few times at the end to leave small blueberry bits.
3. Pour into Molds: Carefully pour the liquid mixture into your silicone molds. Place the mold on a small baking sheet or tray first to make it easier to transfer to the freezer without spilling.
4. Freeze Solid: Place the tray in the freezer and let the pucks freeze completely. This usually takes about 4-6 hours, depending on the size of your molds.
5. Store for Later: Once frozen solid, you can pop the pucks out of the mold and store them in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Expert Tip: For an extra boost, you can add a tablespoon of pure pumpkin puree (not pie filling!) to the mix. It adds fiber and is fantastic for digestive regularity.

While these treats are incredibly healthy, it’s important to remember that they are still treats! They should be given in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Like any new food, introduce them to your dog slowly to make sure their system agrees with them.

Here’s a general guideline for serving sizes, but always consider your dog’s individual size, activity level, and overall diet. When in doubt, a quick chat with your vet is the best course of action.

Serving Size Guide

Important Considerations:

• Allergies: While rare, some dogs can have allergies to dairy, even goat milk. Watch for any signs of digestive upset like gas, bloating, or diarrhea after the first treat.
• Sugar Content: Blueberries contain natural sugar. If your dog is diabetic or overweight, consult your vet before adding these treats to their diet.
• Choose Plain Always: Never use flavored or sweetened goat milk or kefir. Added sugars are unhealthy for dogs, and artificial sweeteners like xylitol are highly toxic.
