2-Ingredient Frozen Watermelon Slushie to Cool Dogs Fast

Before we get to the recipe, let’s talk about why watermelon is such a fantastic choice for dogs. It’s not just a tasty, sweet fruit; it’s a hydration powerhouse! Watermelon is made up of about 92% water, making it one of the most hydrating foods you can offer your pup on a hot day.

Beyond the water content, it’s also packed with beneficial nutrients:

• Vitamin A: Important for vision, skin, and coat health.
• Vitamin C: A great antioxidant that helps boost the immune system.
• Potassium: Essential for healthy muscle and nerve function.

However, there are a couple of very important safety rules to follow:

1. No Seeds: Watermelon seeds can cause an intestinal blockage, especially in smaller dogs. Always use seedless watermelon or take the time to remove every single seed.
2. No Rind: The green rind is tough and difficult for dogs to digest. Chewing on it can lead to gastrointestinal upset or even a blockage. Make sure you only serve your dog the pink, fleshy part of the fruit.

Expert Tip: Think of this slushie as a treat, not a meal replacement. Treats should only make up about 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake to maintain a balanced diet.

Ready for the magic? You’re just a few minutes away from a tail-waggingly good treat. The beauty of this recipe is its simplicity. No fancy ingredients, no complicated steps.

What You’ll Need:

• 2 cups of seedless watermelon, cubed
• 1/4 cup of cold water (or plain, unsweetened coconut water for extra electrolytes)

The Steps:

1. Prep and Freeze: Cut your seedless watermelon into 1-inch cubes. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for at least 2-3 hours, or until solid. This is the key to getting that perfect slushie texture!
2. Blend It Up: Place the frozen watermelon cubes into a blender. Add the 1/4 cup of cold water. The water helps the blender do its job without adding unnecessary calories or ingredients.
3. Pulse to Perfection: Pulse the blender a few times to break up the big chunks, then blend on high for about 30-60 seconds, or until a smooth, slushie-like consistency forms. If it’s too thick, add another tablespoon of water.
4. Serve Immediately: Pour the slushie into your dog’s bowl and serve it right away before it melts!

While this treat is healthy, moderation is key, especially because of the natural sugar in watermelon. Overdoing it can lead to an upset stomach. Here are some general guidelines based on your dog’s size. When in doubt, start small!

Always supervise your dog when they’re trying a new food. If you notice any signs of digestive upset, it might be best to stick to smaller portions or other treats.

Want to get a little creative? You can easily customize this slushie with other dog-safe ingredients. Just remember to introduce new foods slowly and in small quantities.

Try These Fun Add-ins:

• A Blueberry Boost: Toss in a small handful of blueberries before blending. They’re full of antioxidants and most dogs love them.
• Creamy Dream: Add a tablespoon of plain, unsweetened yogurt or kefir for a creamier texture and a dose of probiotics. Make sure it contains no xylitol or artificial sweeteners.
• Minty Fresh: A single, fresh mint leaf can be blended in for a burst of freshness that can also help with doggy breath.
• Go Bananas: For a thicker, more ice-cream-like treat, add half a frozen banana to the mix.

Avoid adding any grapes, raisins, cherries, or anything with artificial sweeteners, especially xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs.
